Baltimore Gun Trace Task Force Focus Of HBO's 'We Own This City'

BALTIMORE, MD — HBO has released the trailer Wednesday for its highly anticipated miniseries, "We Own This City," which documents the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force.

Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton wrote the nonfiction book that inspired the HBO miniseries, which will consist of six one-hour episodes.

"It examines the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work," HBO said on its website.

Filming of "We Own This City" took place for several months in and around the Baltimore area late last year.

In January, following a two-year investigation, a D.C. law firm, Steptoe & Johnson, released a damning 600-page report into the Gun Trace Task Force.

Issues brought to light by the scandal reflected problems within the Baltimore Police Department that left it vulnerable to corruption, such as not properly vetting candidates for jobs and lacking accountability and supervision.

To date, 12 officers have been convicted in connection with the Gun Trace Task Force.

Cast members of the upcoming miniseries include Jon Bernthal, who played Shane Walsh in "The Walking Dead"; Josh Charles, who starred as Will Gardner on "The Good Wife"; and Jamie Hector, known for his role as Marlo Stanfield on "The Wire."

The producer is David Simon, who oversaw production of "Homicide: Life on the Street," "The Wire" and "The Corner" — series that also filmed in Baltimore.

"We Own This City" premieres on HBO on Monday, April 25 at 9 p.m.
