House Of Cards Season 6 Production To Resume In 2018 Minus Spacey

Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos announced the news on Monday, saying it will bring back work to those in Baltimore whose livelihoods depend on it.

The Netflix political drama House of Cards is returning for a sixth and final season minus the show's longtime star Kevin Spacey, who was suspended by production company Media Rights Capital after numerous allegations of sexual misconduct were leveled against him.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said production on the show will resume in early 2018. Sarandos made the comments on Monday at UBS's Global Media and Communications Conference in New York, according to Variety. Robin Wright, who plays the role of Claire Underwood — a character who has political ambition equivalent to her husband's (Frank Underwood played by Spacey) and is a star in her own right on the show, will play the lead in the last season.

Sarandos added that the eight-episode season will bring closure to the fans and bring back to work some 2,000 people in the Baltimore area, according to a Deadline report of Sarandos' remarks. Previous seasons of House of Cards have had 13 episodes. Production on the show was suspended on Oct. 31.

Shortly after production was axed, MRC said it had suspended Spacey and Netflix said it would not be involved in any further production involving Spacey.

Actor Anthony Rapp was the first to accuse Spacey of sexual misconduct and others soon followed.

Producers have been filming the political drama in Harford County, north of Baltimore, since the show began in 2012. "House of Cards" operates a sound stage based out of a warehouse in Joppa and has used local sites to film various scenes including Harford Community College, the Havre de Grace Library, Liriodendron Mansion and a Level Road antique store, among others.

Filming has taken place traditionally in summer and fall, with the show being released in the first quarter of the year.
