These Beloved Retailers Permanently Closed In MD In 2025

Throughout the year, several retailers and chains announced plans to close or potentially close Maryland locations. See the full list.

Store closures surged across the country in 2025 as dozens of brands shut down brick-and-mortar locations, including many in Maryland.

According to CoreSight Research, retailers across multiple sectors announced 67 percent more store closures in 2025 than in the previous year, caused mainly by rising operating costs and the continued growth of e-commerce.

Among the companies with Maryland locations that announced they would close stores this year are these well-known retailers:

American Eagle Closes Anne Arundel County Location

American Eagle closed its location in the Waugh Chapel Towne Centre. The clothier opened in summer 2021 between DICK's Sporting Goods and Five Below. It spanned 4,922 square feet.

Big Lots Bankruptcy: These MD Stores Likely Doomed

Big Lots held on during bankruptcy after getting a lifeline from Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, which saved between 200 and 400 stores from full liquidation. However, the new owners planned to sell the leases to 480 stores, according to Business Insider, including 17 of the company's 18 remaining Maryland locations.

Carter's, A National Retailer With 20 MD Locations, Closing 150 Stores

In October, Carter's announced it would be shuttering 150 of its stores nationwide. In addition to the store closures, Carter's will reduce its office workforce by about 15 percent by cutting roughly 300 positions.

Popular Retail Chain Claire's Closing 7 Maryland Locations

Claire’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this summer. The retailer planned to close 700 stores and was considering liquidating its entire 1,500-store footprint in North America. However, when a private equity firm acquired Claire’s assets, the liquidation plan was paused for about half of the stores. In Maryland, seven stores were closed.

Dollar General Closing Dozens Of Stores: What It Means For MD Shoppers

Dollar General planned to close nearly 100 stores and 45 Popshelf stores nationwide by year’s end. The stores represent less than 1 percent of the company’s overall store base, and some Popshelf stores will be converted to Dollar General locations. Dollar General operates just over 175 stores in Maryland.

Forever 21 Bankruptcy: What It Means For 6 MD Stores

Fast-fashion retailer Forever 21 closed 356 U.S. stores, citing overseas competition, rising costs and other economic challenges in its Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition. International stores were not affected. Forever 21 operated six locations in Maryland that were impacted by the closures.

Harris Teeter Closing MoCo Store Location: Reports

Harris Teeter is closing one of its Montgomery County stores, according to media reports. The North Bethesda location at 11845 Old Georgetown Road in Rockville will close in late July. The grocery chain owned by Kroger also plans to close two stores in Arlington, Virginia, and a location in Tysons, Virginia, in late July.

Iconic Clothing Chain Closing This MoCo Store

Despite a cautious turnaround in company fortunes, The Gap is closing one of its Montgomery County locations this week. The clothing chain closed its Westfield Montgomery Mall store in Bethesda permanently on Thursday, July 24, The MoCo Show reported.

JCPenney Sells 119 Stores In Nearly $1B Deal: Which MD Locations Are Affected

JCPenney closed eight stores in May, calling them “isolated” closures that did not signal a reduction in the venerable department chain’s store count. In July, two Maryland stores were among 119 stores sold to a Boston private equity firm in a nearly $1 billion deal. In September, JCPenney closed its store located in Annapolis Mall.

Joann Fabrics To Close 14 Remaining Locations In Maryland: See List

The last Joann fabric stores closed in May; however, one of the retailer’s biggest rivals, Michaels, bought some of the company's private label brands and intellectual property. All 14 Joann locations in Maryland were closed.

2 MD Macy's Stores To Close

Macy’s planned to close another 66 stores this year as part of its “A Bold New Chapter” strategy that will shutter 150 underperforming stores by the end of 2026. In Maryland, Macy's closed locations in Towson and Bel Air.

Party City To Close All Stores, Including 20 In MD: Report

Party City closed for good this year, Patch previously reported. This included 20 locations in Maryland.

Major Pharmacy Chain RiteAid Closes: What It Means For MD Customers

Rite Aid closed roughly 1,250 stores, selling most to rival pharmacy chains. The company's last remaining Maryland stores closed in October, five months after the company declared its second bankruptcy in two years. Before its first bankruptcy in 2023, Rite Aid had about 40 Maryland locations.

Chain Closing 4 More Grocery Stores In MD

Four more Shoppers grocery stores will close by early November, including three in Prince George's County. United Natural Foods, Inc., which acquired Shoppers Food & Pharmacy in 2018, said in a statement provided to USA Today on Oct. 23 that the company "realizes the stores are important to those who work, shop and live in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia," the regions primarily served by the affected grocery stores.

TD Bank To Shut Down 1 MD Branch: What To Know

TD Bank, one of the largest financial institutions in the United States, will close dozens of locations along the East Coast, the firm announced in December. All told, TD will close 51 branches in 12 states and Washington, D.C., they said. That includes four bank locations in the greater DC-Maryland-Northern Virginia area.
