MARYLAND — A hot and humid day is on tap for northern Maryland with heat indices as high as 101 degrees, the National Weather Service reports.

A heat advisory is also currently in effect for St. Mary's and Calvert Counties from noon to 8 p.m. Isolated severe thunderstorms are also possible this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur, weather experts warn.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances," NWS forecasters said.

A severe thunderstorm with damaging wind gusts is possible during the afternoon to evening hours Thursday for areas along the Chesapeake Bay, Tidal Potomac River, and I-95 corridor through central Maryland, the National Weather Service reports.
