HARFORD COUNTY, MD — The Harford County Sheriff's Office released the names of the two deputies involved in a deadly shooting over the weekend.

Sgt. Sives and Cpl. Maddox fired their weapons, officials said. Both officers have been with the agency since 2007.

Sives is assigned to the Northern Precinct's Police Operations Bureau, while Maddox works in the Criminal Investigations Division's Criminal Investigative Services Bureau.

Due to the investigation, authorities said both deputies are on routine administration leave.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office is conducting its own internal investigation, while the Office of the Attorney General is conducting an investigation as well, since the state requires that agency to look into all fatal police-involved shootings, based on a law that took effect in October 2021.

In the months before and after the law was enacted, the sheriff and attorney general clashed over investigations into police-involved shootings, The Aegis reported.

The sheriff's attorney wrote a letter saying that the Harford County Sheriff's Office would give state investigators access to its materials. However, the sheriff's attorney said: "HSCO will not stand down or cede its own responsibility to investigate" since it must conduct an internal investigation with the officers.
