Baby Geese Take To Roads In Bel Air

A family of geese was strutting Wednesday morning on Route 24 and Wheel Road.

BEL AIR, MD — As vehicles whizzed by, a brood of geese waited at the intersection of Wheel Road and MD 24. They crossed Wednesday morning when the traffic paused, as the birds waddled their way to the water.

Canada geese nest in the spring, with eggs hatching between April and June, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

The birds mate for life and care for their young together, often staying together for months, authorities said.

Bel Air Patch watched the birds make the journey down to water on the property where the Maryland Center for the Arts will be built.

Geese can spend up to 12 hours a day searching for food to get adequate nutrients, officials reported, and they gravitate to marshes, ponds, fields, golf courses and lakes. The birds feed on vegetation like berries and grasses.
