Driver Says He's Not Concerned about Bicyclist after Collision

An Abingdon man said a bicyclist hit his car as he drove toward the intersection of MD Route 23 and MD Route 24 Thursday afternoon.

"He evidently saw someone he knew and waved," 27-year-old Mathew Dick said. "He ran straight into me."

Dick, an Abingdon resident who formerly lived in Forest Hill, was headed south on MD Route 24 in his passenger car when a 64-year-old man on a bicycle crashed into the passenger side of his car. The bicyclist was transported by ambulance to Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore for treatment.

The bike operator sustained injures that did not appear to be life-threatening, according to Maryland State Police with the Bel Air Barrack.

Dick told Patch the bicyclist was allegedly distracted as he turned off of MD Route 23 and not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

"I want this on record, he's injured and I don't care," Dick said.

Dick held out a copy of the accident information provided by state police that listed the man on the bike as at fault.

He went on to say he was angry about the accident and felt victimized by the bicyclist's alleged inattention. He added he has no way to pay for the damage done to his car.

Dick said he suffers from post traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder and the accident had thrown him into the worst panic attack he had experienced in two years.

"I think people who ride bikes on the road should have liability insurance," Dick said.
