Child Killed, Father Hurt In Route 24 Hit-And-Run Crash: Police

A 5-year-old died and his father was injured in a hit-and-run crash in Edgewood Thursday night, according to Maryland State Police.

EDGEWOOD, MD — Police said a boy died and an adult was hospitalized after a hit-and-run crash on Thursday night on MD 24 in Harford County.

The two tried to cross Route 24 at Edgewood Road before 10:45 p.m. when officials said a Toyota RAV4 hit the pedestrians, who were not in a crosswalk.

Trayln Marnell Sanders, 5, and James Marnell Sanders, 35, were hospitalized, authorities said. The two were father and son, Maryland State Police spokesperson Ronald Snyder told Patch.

Tralyn Sanders was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased, according to police.

James Sanders was flown to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for treatment of his injuries, officials said. His condition was not immediately available.

Troopers said they found the driver — Corey James Maddox Jr., 30, of Edgewood — soon after the crash and took him to the Bel Air Barrack for questioning.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing, and once it is complete, the Maryland State Police Crash Team will provide its findings to the Harford County State’s Attorney’s Office for a determination on whether charges should be filed.

Route 24 was closed for a little less than three hours due to the investigation, according to Maryland State Police. All lanes had reopened by 2:20 a.m. on Friday, the Maryland State Highway Administration reported.
