Due To Storm Damage, HCPS Closed On Thursday, July 14

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — After powerful storms rolled through the region, schools in Harford County will be closed for the second day in a row.

More than 10,400 customers in Harford County — or 9.2 percent — are without power as of 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to state outage data.

Due to trees and/or wires down, 37 Harford County roads also remain closed.

"Fortunately, no reports of injuries from the storm as of last night but many trees & wires are down," the Harford County Department of Emergency Services reported Wednesday.

All schools and offices will be closed Thursday, July 14, "as HCPS staff continue to respond to road closures and damage across the school system," Harford County Public Schools officials announced Wednesday night.

The school closure means these will be canceled Thursday:

• Summer meal sites
• Summer programs (in-person elementary, middle, and high; ESY, ELL, and Summer Music and virtual like tutoring, and Wellness Walking)
• Summer school

Essential personnel should await further instruction, officials said.

"We want to thank those HCPS staff who worked today to begin the recovery process following storms across the county last night," Harford County Public Schools said in a statement. "HCPS staff will continue to monitor road closures and damage experienced throughout the school system. This closure allows additional time for staff to ensure the safety of students and staff when schools and offices reopen.”

Harford County Public Schools was also closed on Wednesday due to the storm recovery efforts.

Harford County was not the only jurisdiction hit by severe weather on Tuesday. After 6 p.m., College Park experienced 80 to 90 mph winds that uprooted trees and were likely straight line winds, which can produce effects similar to a tornado, according to the National Weather Service.
