Proposed Tobacco Regulation Applies to County Employees, Visitors

A proposed regulation to make all county property a tobacco-free zone, if violated, could lead to disciplinary action for employees and removal from the property for others.

All county-owned property, including parks and recreation facilities and parking lots, could become tobacco-free zones .

The is not involved in passing the regulation, Bob Thomas, spokesman for , explained.

"This is a county government regulation," Thomas said.

As an administrative rule, it would be put into practice by the Executive Branch after at least one advertised public hearing and then added to the county code, according to the county charter.

Employees who violate the regulation would be subject to disciplinary action and visitors would be required to stop or leave the property, according to a document outlining the rule.

If passed, the rule would go into effect Jan. 1, 2012.

A public hearing on the regulation is scheduled at 2 p.m. Dec. 5 in the second floor conference room of the Harford County Government Administration Building, 220 S. Main St. in Bel Air.
