HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Due to repairs, officials say a section of US 1 will be closed on the Harford County side of the Conowingo Dam.

Southbound Route 1/Conowingo Road will be shut down past the hydroelectric building at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5.

The closure will last for 24 hours, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

During the closure, crews will repair steel beams, including bolting and welding new pieces of steel to beams that are already in place.

"While the structure is safe for travel, the lanes need to be closed while the work is being performed," the State Highway Administration said in a statement.

Flaggers will guide drivers to a northbound lane that will be open; however, authorities encourage people to take US 40/Pulaski Highway as an alternate route until the work is complete.

About 15,000 vehicles use this portion of Conowingo Road daily, officials said.
