Bakery To Close In Bethesda, Looks For New Site

Josephine bakery in Bethesda said its lease has not been renewed, so it must close, but hopes to find a new home to operate from.

BETHESDA, MD — After nearly three years, the gluten-free Josephine bakery at 4927A Saint Elmo Ave. in Bethesda has announced its plans to close at the end of the month but hopes to reopen at a new site.

The business posted on its website: "Josephine is closing in Bethesda 💔 July 31. But this isn’t the end — just a new beginning. Each order placed same day will be ready to pick up next day. Thank you for your understanding."

The bakery's team posted on Facebook Tuesday that its lease is not being renewed.

"Since October 2022, we’ve had the immense joy of serving a community that truly embraced us — not just in Bethesda, but far beyond," the business said on Facebook. … "We are deeply proud to have brought high-quality, gluten-free pastries and baked goods to the table — always crafted with care, precision, and purpose. To our loyal customers: THANK YOU for your trust, your love, and your support."

The business said its team is actively looking for a new space to relocate to soon.

Josephine is also open to all business or partnership proposals, including: An exclusive recipe license, a local or national franchise, commercialization of its proprietary gluten-free flour mixes — for retail or professional use, or the acquisition of a premium, recognized gluten-free brand.

In the meantime, store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday; and 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
