Iconic Clothing Chain Closing This MoCo Store

BETHESDA, MD — Despite a cautious turnaround in company fortunes, The Gap is closing one of its Montgomery County locations this week.
The clothing chain will close its Westfield Montgomery Mall store in Bethesda permanently on Thursday, July 24, The MoCo Show reported.

- 5430 Wisconsin Ave. in Chevy Chase;
- 1820 Grand Park Ave., Unit 1104, at Pike & Rose in Rockville
- Clarksburg Premium Outlets, 22705 Clarksburg Road, Suite 644, in Clarksburg
From 2001 to 2021 the clothing chain close roughly 2,000 stores as annual sales shrank by $3.5 billion, CNBC reported last month. But, Gap reported 5% same-store sales growth for its fiscal first quarter of 2025.
Gap also owns the Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta brands.

CNBC also said questions raised by U.S. tariff policies as President Donald Trump has created a challenging retail landscape. Despite beating Wall Street’s earnings expectations for its fiscal first-quarter report, Gap saw its stock fall 15% on news that tariffs, if they remain in place as is, would cost the company between $100 million and $150 million.
