Jogger Sexually Assaulted On Bethesda Trail, Police Say

A man who allegedly sexually assaulted a jogger told police he thought he had "up to five minutes to be consensual."

BETHESDA, MD — A man who allegedly sexually assaulted a jogger in Bethesda told police he thought he had "up to five minutes to be consensual," according to reports. William Opare, 24, of Northwest D.C. is accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the Capital Crescent Trail, ABC 7 News reports. He is scheduled to appear for a status hearing at Montgomery County District Court in Silver Spring on February 1.

Police said Opare grabbed the woman's buttocks and breasts while she jogged on the trail at about 2:15 p.m. November 30. The victim pepper sprayed Opare to break free of his grip, police said.

The woman called 911 to report the assault from the trail. Maryland-National Capital Park Police located Opare fleeing down the trail, police said. He allegedly told police that the woman pepper sprayed him and said, "I poked her in the butt. I thought I had up to five minutes to be consensual."

Opare was charged with second-degree assault and two counts of fourth-degree sex offense.
