MD Man Charged With Mailing Threats To Jewish Organizations

Prosecutors said the man sent threats to organizations that often referenced Gaza, Israel or events in which Jewish people were killed.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A Montgomery County man is facing charges after federal prosecutors said he mailed numerous written threats to Jewish organizations in Pennsylvania and other states.

Clift A. Seferlis, 55, of Garrett Park, was arrested and charged by criminal complaint with mailing threatening communications, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced.

According to the criminal complaint, from at least March 1, 2024, Seferlis sent threats to Jewish organizations that often referenced Gaza, Israel, or events in which Jewish people were killed or attacked. The letters then suggested that the recipients might become victims of similar acts of violence, prosecutors said.

One Jewish institution in Philadelphia received numerous threatening letters believed to be sent by Seferlis, prosecutors said. One letter contained a threat to physically destroy the institution, while another referenced its “many big open windows,” “Kristallnacht,” “anger and rage" and a future need to “rebuild” the institution following its destruction.

This case was investigated by FBI Philadelphia, with assistance from FBI Baltimore, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Montgomery County Police Department.
