Montgomery County's COVID-19 Case Total Surpasses 40K

BETHESDA, MD — The number of COVID-19 infections recorded since March in Montgomery County surpassed 40,000 on Tuesday, according to the Maryland Department of Health.

Health officials reported 341 new coronavirus cases, pushing the countywide total to 40,062. In the last 24 hours, 10 more people have died from COVID-19. The county's death toll now stands at 990.

Another 44 people, health officials say, may have died from COVID-19, but never got tested. A lab test must confirm an infection before a "probable death" can be added to the official fatality count.

Montgomery County, which is home to roughly 1 million people, continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second-highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 48,232, according to the latest figures.

Across Maryland, there have been 239,362 coronavirus cases, 5,039 confirmed deaths, and 167 "probable deaths." Of the 1,799 patients being hospitalized for the disease statewide, 411 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
