Motorcyclist Killed In MoCo Crash Remembered As 'A Kind, Joyous Person'

The 54-year-old Bethesda man died Monday when his motorcycle crashed in South Kensington, police said.

SOUTH KENSINGTON, MD — Authorities have identified the motorcycle driver killed in a Monday crash in South Kensington, and his death has left a devastating hole in the local cycling community, according to those who knew him.

According to Montgomery County police, the crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Beach Drive between Knowles Avenue and Grosvenor Lane in South Kensington.

Police said 54-year-old Abraham Michael Ehlers of Bethesda was driving a black 2006 Suzuki DR-Z400 motorcycle on Beach Road when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the tree line.

Ehlers was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Ehlers was a member of the Artemis Cycling Team, which mourned his death in a statement released on Instagram.

"Abe’s dedication to the sport, spirit and kindness left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of riding alongside him," the team wrote. "His laughter, dedication and contributions to the sport and friendship will be profoundly missed."

Frank Shewmaker, who met Ehlers 10 years ago when they were both members of the Artemis Cycling Team, told Patch that Ehlers was active in mountain, cyclocross and road racing. He called Ehlers an "exceptional athlete" who would routinely win races.

But he was most well known for being "a kind, joyous person," who was filled with youthful energy.

"He always brought positivity and fun to any bike ride or race," Shewmaker said. "Everyone knew him. My phone has been buzzing all day with testimonials to his wonderful character."

Shewmaker continued, "It's fair to say the cycling community is devastated."

Montgomery County police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing, and CRU detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call 240-773-6620.
