Police ID Man Killed In North Bethesda Shooting, 2 Suspects At Large

A 37-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with a kidnapping related to the shooting, police said.

NORTH BETHESDA, MD — Authorities have identified a man killed Sunday in a shooting at a North Bethesda residence. Montgomery County police are also searching for two suspects wanted in connection with the shooting and a related kidnapping.

According to police, officers responded to the 5900 block of Montrose Road around 7:45 a.m. Sundayfor what police initially described as a death investigation, according to a social media post from the Montgomery County Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found 29-year-old Akwalabeng Fontava inside an apartment with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives learned that a man and woman who were also inside the apartment were allegedly kidnapped and forced into a vehicle following the shooting. The man was later released in Silver Spring.

Detectives later located the car at Westfield Montgomery Mall, where police said the woman was found with 37-year-old Sheldon Milan Boykins of Hyattsville.

Boykins was taken into custody and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was charged with two counts of kidnapping and firearms-related offenses.

The investigation into the shooting and kidnapping is ongoing. Detectives are still searching for two additional adult male suspects believed to be involved.
