UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Montgomery County

Warning in effect through 4 p.m. Sunday.

Update, 3:28 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued an additional severe thunderstorm warning for southeastern Montgomery County through 4 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, a severe thunderstorm was detected near Fort Totten around 3:10 p.m. capable of producing quarter-sized hail and 60 mph winds. The storm was moving east.

Residents in the path of the storm are advised to move indoors and stay away from windows.

Update, 2:35 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement. A line of strong thunderstorms stretching from Colesville to Centreville was detected around 2:26 p.m., moving east.

Impacted areas include Colesville, Garrett Park, Clifton, the American Legion Bridge, Glenmont, Wheaton, Chevy Chase View, Cabin John and Glen Echo, according to the statement.

The storm is producing frequent lightning and residents are advised to move indoors. Penny- to nickel-sized hail and wind gusts over 50 mph—strong enough to take down large tree branches—are possible.

Update, 1:45 p.m.: The severe thunderstorm warning for Montgomery County is now expiring at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, according to NOAA.

Update, 1:35 p.m. A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Montgomery County through 2:15 p.m., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Original Post, 1:30 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Montgomery County through 9 p.m. Sunday.

The storms could be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and isolated tornadoes, according to NWS.

Heavy rains may also lead to flash flooding. A remains in effect for Montgomery County through 11 p.m.
