Letter Carrier Robbed At Gunpoint On Her Route In Chevy Chase, $50K Reward Offered

A U.S. Postal Service letter carrier was robbed at gunpoint on Tuesday while delivering mail on her route in Chevy Chase, officials said.

CHEVY CHASE, MD — The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a $50,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a man who robbed a letter carrier at gunpoint in a Chevy Chase neighborhood on Tuesday.

Montgomery County police officers and U.S. postal inspectors were dispatched to the 8800 block of Walnut Hill Road in Chevy Chase for the report of the robbery. The letter carrier was approached from behind by the suspect while delivering mail on her route, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said.

The suspect had a handgun and demanded U.S. Postal Service property, officials said. After stealing the property, he fled the scene on foot, according to officials. The letter carrier was not harmed during the robbery, and no injuries were reported, according to the postal inspection service.

In another recent robbery, police arrested a D.C. man in January in connection with the armed robbery of a letter carrier in Silver Spring.

In 2022, thieves in Montgomery and Prince George's counties stole mailbox keys and used those keys to steal mail from blue mail boxes in Bethesda and Chevy Chase. The thieves then would find checks within the mail and forge their names, sometimes for thousands of dollars.

In July 2022, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced six robberies of postal service letter carriers in Maryland and D.C.

The suspect in Tuesday's robbery, described as a Black man in his early 20s, is about 5-feet, 9-inches tall. He was last seen wearing blue basketball shorts and a white shirt, according to officials.

As part of its investigation, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering the $50,000 reward. Information can be anonymously reported to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455.
