Week in Review: May 9 - May 15

U.S. Open preparations, a visit from Mike Tyson, and parking fees all made headlines this week.

The news week kicked off with County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) kicking off the to encourage residents and visitors to the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club to eat, dine, and shop locally. The Open is expected to draw nearly 40,000 spectators daily to Bethesda next month, and Leggett said the Open should provide a huge boost to the local economy.

On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council voted to beginning July 1, but voted down a proposal to charge Bethesda parkers on Saturdays. The council also staved off a vote on a land swap deal between the county and a developer that would bring a to Cordell Avenue as part of a mixed-used development. The full council is expected to take up the measure again on Tuesday.

This week, we also reported that next to the Bethesda Row Cinema. The Gifford’s space was left empty last year after the company became entangled in a messy legal battle.

On Friday, details of what a new development at the former Trillium site near Wisconsin and Battery Lane emerged as developers met with the Woodmont Triangle Action Group. Options being considered for the conceptual plan include according to developers Stonebridge, who bought the site recently after the original residential project planned for the site fizzled.  Members of the WTAG want to push for artist studio space in the new development as was agreed upon with previous developer, the Patrinely Group.
