CHEVY CHASE, MD — A smoke alarm woke a Chevy Chase woman up and alerted her of a fire shortly before her home was demolished by the blaze Tuesday morning.

The woman entertained dozens of family members Christmas evening before the heavy fire broke out at around 2 a.m. in the living room, chief fire department spokesperson Pete Piringer said. The fire occurred in the 3300 block of Cummings Lane.

Piringer said the fire spread quickly throughout the home and caused about $300,000 to $400,000 worth of damage.

The woman was able to escape her home before she was caught in the flames. She was brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Piringer said.

At this time, officials believe the fire was accidental and caused by an electrical problem.
