PG County Election 2019: Voters Choose Mayors, Councilmembers

The cities of Bowie, Greenbelt, Laurel, and College Park all have public officials up for election on Tuesday.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — While there are no statewide elections in Maryland this year, voters in several Prince George's County cities will go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to choose their elected officials.

Bowie, Greenbelt, Laurel, and College Park all will hold elections where voters will choose their cities' leaders.

In Bowie, all city offices including mayor, at-large councilmembers, and district councilmembers will be up for election. You can find the Bowie sample ballot here.

There are a record number of candidates for Bowie elections, including five for mayor alone after G. Frederick Robinson, the mayor since 1998, vacated the position.

District 2 Councilmember Dufour Woolfley is the only candidate who is running unopposed. Two councilmembers, James Marcos (at-large) and Isaac Trouth (District 4), are not running for re-election.

A total of 17 candidates are vying for the council seats. Aside from the two mentioned, here are the other candidates in alphabetical order by last name:

District 1:

District 3:

  • Kevin L. Motley
  • Darian Senn-Carter

District 4:

  • Leon Buck

At-large:

  • Babatunde Alegbeleye
  • Henri Gardner
  • Ingrid S. Harrison
  • Dustin Kuzan

Here are the mayoral candidates, as well as a brief description of their qualifications, according to the Capital Gazette:

  • Timothy Adams (a disability advocate and business owner)
  • Dennis Brady (served as a Bowie councilman for two decades)
  • Len Lucchi (a Prince George's County attorney for more than 35 years)
  • Emerson DeWitt Ruth (a retired Los Angeles Police officer)
  • Keith Jackson (a 25-year-old who unsuccessfully ran for mayor four years ago)

In Greenbelt, eight candidates will be vying for the city council: Judith F. Davis, Emmett V. Jordan, Edward V. Putens, Rodney M. Roberts, Bill Orleans, Silke I. Pope, Colin Byrd, and Leta Mach. You can learn more about each of the candidates on Greenbelt's candidate web page.

In Laurel, voters will choose between Jeffrey W. Mills and Craig A. Moe to be the next mayor. Also up for election are three councilmember slots:

Councilmember at-large:

  • Thomas E. Matthews, Jr.
  • Valerie M.A. Nicholas

Councilmember Ward 1 (vote for two):

  • Carl DeWalt
  • Michael R. Leszcz

Councilmember Ward 2 (vote for two):

  • Brencis Smith
  • Keith R. Sydnor

Finally, the city of College Park will be voting on the following candidates for mayor and council:

  • Lalzarliani H. Malsawma
  • Nikesha S. Pancho
  • Patrick L. Wojahn

District 1:

  • S. M. Fazlul Kabir
  • Catherine Hope Kennedy

District 2:

  • P. J. Brennan
  • Monroe S. Dennis

District 3:

  • Robert W. Day, Sr.
  • Mark Mullauer
  • John B. Rigg

District 4:

  • Micheal O. Emmanuel
  • Maria Mackie
  • Denise C. Mitchell

You are not usually required to show ID to vote in Maryland as long as you are registered to vote, but there are a few instances where you may be asked for ID.
