Police Officer Cleared In PG County Crash That Killed Mom Of 4

Patricia Riddick died in March when her SUV was struck by a car that was fleeing police.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A Prince George's County police officer will not be charged in connection with an officer-involved collision that claimed the life of a mother of four, according to the Maryland Attorney General's Office.

On March 21, around 7:30 p.m., Seat Pleasant Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop on a Hyundai sedan. The driver of the Hyundai initially stopped for the officers, and then eventually fled, prosecutors said in their investigative report released Friday.

According to prosecutors, the officers immediately alerted dispatch of the driver’s actions via radio and initiated a pursuit, which was terminated within about 30 seconds.

Several nearby Prince George’s County Police Department patrol officers who heard the radio call then spotted the Hyundai pull into a gas station, prosecutors said. As the Hyundai left the gas station, a PGPD officer activated his lights and briefly pursued the car, but the driver of the Hyundai did not stop.

According to prosecutors, supervisors called off the pursuit. Within seconds, the PGPD officer turned off his lights and discontinued his pursuit of the Hyundai. Shortly thereafter, however, the Hyundai ran a red light and collided with an uninvolved Nissan SUV that was traveling through the intersection.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as Patricia Riddick, and a child passenger were taken to area hospitals, where Riddick was pronounced dead.

The PGPD officer involved in the incident was identified as Corporal Travis Underwood, police confirmed in March.

Loved ones told News4 that Riddick had just picked up her daughter and they were on their way home when the crash occurred.

“She was three minutes away from home….” Crystal Bandy, Riddick’s mother-in-law, told News4 in March. “Three minutes. It was the worst three minutes of our life. The worst nightmare of our life. And to me, I'm just waiting for somebody to pinch me and say it’s not, it’s just a dream, it’s not real.”

Riddick's four children were left without parents following the crash, as their father died in 2024.

“She was their everything," Bandy said.
