Bowie Man Spends Months In Prison Over Jars Of Honey: Report

A Bowie man reportedly was falsely accused of smuggling drugs from Jamaica when authorities thought his honey was meth.

A Bowie man spent months behind bars because authorities mistakenly thought the honey he brought back from Jamaica was actually meth, according to a report.

NBC 4 reports that Leon Houghton had returned to Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Airport in December after a trip to Jamaica, and he had brought back with him jars of honey which he likes to use in his tea.

However, customs officials said the jars tested positive for meth, and sent the honey to a lab in Georgia for confirmation. Because of the large amount of drugs authorities claimed Houghton had, he couldn't get a bond and languished in jail, losing his employment in the process, according to reports. Because he is not a U.S. citizen, he also risked deportation.

Once lab tests showed that it was indeed honey in those jars, authorities dropped the charges, but the damage had been done. He returned home to no job, mounting bills, and a wrecked credit score, according to the report.

He says he hasn't even received an apology.
