Bomb-Sniffing Dogs Are In Bowie On Monday: Here's Why

A threat was reported Monday morning at Bowie State University, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

BOWIE, MD — A bomb threat was called in to Bowie State University Monday morning, according to authorities.

For about five hours, the campus was closed and a shelter-in-place order was instituted.

Around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Bowie State University officials directed those on campus to shelter in place.

Due to an emergency on campus, officials said the campus was closed and classes would meet virtually.

After 9 a.m., the Office of the State Fire Marshal reported it was using explosive-detecting K-9 officers to sweep the buildings on campus, with help from the Maryland State Police and the Prince George's County Fire Department.

By 2 p.m., Bowie State University lifted its shelter-in-place order and opened the campus, after officials said federal, state and local emergency personnel searched the school and found no devices.

Virtual classes and teleworking were authorized through Monday, officials said, and for much of the day, MARC trains bypassed the Bowie station due to police activity.
