LAUREL, MD — Authorities have charged a man with attempted murder and other crimes in a November 2024 shooting that injured Tobias Dorzon, a well-known Hyattsville chef and former NFL player.

Devin Demetrius Spivey, 21, was arrested Friday at a home on the 9100 block of Cherry Lane in Laurel, Hyattsville police said in a news release. Spivey was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Spivey faces numerous charges, police said, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, armed robbery and stalking. He is being held without bond.

"This arrest is a crucial step toward justice for the victims and safety for our community," Hyattsville Police Chief Jarod Towers said in a statement. "Our officers worked tirelessly alongside our law enforcement partners to identify and apprehend the suspect. We hope this provides some relief to the victims and everyone involved.”

The double shooting and robbery happened on Nov. 5 in the 2500 block of Kirkwood Place. According to police, Spivey was one of five people who attempted to rob Dorzon and his female companion as they returned from dinner.

Both Dorzon and the woman were shot, police said. They were treated at the hospital and survived their injuries.

“Both were struck multiple times by gunfire. The suspects then approached the victim and took personal effects from him, and then fled in the same vehicle, which was a white, small SUV crossover with a sunroof, and fled the area,” Towers previously said.

While authorities did not name Dorzon, Prince George's County Councilmember Wanika Fisher confirmed he was involved in the shooting.

Dorzon owns two restaurants in Prince George’s County, Huncho House and 1123 By Chef Tobias, both in Hyattsville. Named the 2024 Maryland Chef of the Year, Dorzon has appeared on the Food Network and hosts a cooking show called "Timeout with Tobias" on ESPN and Hulu.

Before his culinary career, Dorzon played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tennessee Titans.

Police said the investigation into the shooting is still active.
