Mom Killed, Toddler Injured In Crash With Stolen Vehicle Driven By Teens: PGPD

A D.C. mom died and her 2-year-old was seriously injured in a crash with a stolen vehicle driven by 4 teens, Prince George's Police report.

LANDOVER, MD — A Washington, D.C., mom was killed Tuesday afternoon when police say four teens in a stolen vehicle crashed into the mom's car. Her 2-year-old child also was in the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.

According to the Prince George's Police Department, on Aug. 26 around 3:50 p.m., Seat Pleasant police officers say a vehicle that had been reported stolen Aug. 22 traveling in the area of Seat Pleasant Drive and Joplin Street. Officers followed the vehicle, which sped up while driving on Sheriff Road and red a red light at the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Highway.

That's when the stolen vehicle hit the side of 35-year-old Shaunte Denise Canty's vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. Canty died at the scene, according to police. Canty's child was taken to the hospital, as were three of the teenage boys in the stolen vehicle. The fourth teen was taken into police custody, according to police.

The teens are ages 15 through 17, Prince George’s County Police Acting Chief George Nader said at a news conference. Detectives are investigating the four teens for unrelated crimes that may involve the stolen vehicle, as well as working in conjunction with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine what charges to file against the teens.

State's Attorney Tara Jackson released a statement saying that justice will be served.

"Instead of celebrating our children, we’re talking about a life that was lost," Jackson said. "Whatever violations of the law we see, we will charge for that... We have got to hold our young people responsible. If we don’t, we will continue to see tragedies like the one that we’ve seen today."
