No Charges Filed After Woman Fleeing Police On Foot Hit By Passing Vehicles On I-495
The AG announced that no charges will be filed against the officers in a case where a suspect was running from them and was fatally hit.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — No charges will be filed in the Feb. 1 fatal officer-involved crash involving a pedestrian, Attorney General Anthony G. Brown has announced.
On Saturday, Feb. 1 at approximately 7:58 p.m., officers from the Prince George’s County Police Department, Forest Heights Police Department and the chief of the Edmonston Police Department were conducting surveillance on an unoccupied Mercedes sedan in the 6000 block of Oxon Hill Road in Oxon Hill. The Mercedes had been reported stolen earlier that day in connection with a carjacking and was found parked in a commercial parking lot, according to police.
During the officers’ surveillance, a woman - later identified as Aniyah Redd - got into the vehicle and began to drive away. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens and attempted to initiate a traffic stop; however, Redd refused to stop. Instead, Redd drove behind a business within the lot, where she crashed. The Mercedes flipped onto its side and as officers ran up to the vehicle, they discovered that Redd had already escaped the vehicle, climbed over a fence and ran onto Interstate 495 (“the Beltway”) on foot. While attempting to find her, an officer saw Redd crossing the Beltway. She was then hit by two vehicles. Redd was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the impact. The occupants of the vehicles involved were uninjured, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police reported.
