Woman Killed When Tire Flies Off Pickup, Crashes Into Car Sending Vehicle Into Guardrail
A woman died when a tire flew off a pickup, crashed into her vehicle and shoved her vehicle into a concrete barrier, police say.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A Washington, D.C., woman was killed when a tire fell off a pickup Monday that was heading northbound on I-495 and crashed into her vehicle that then rammed into a concrete barrier and guardrail.
According to the Maryland State Police, troopers were called to Interstate 495 at Medical Center Drive Aug. 18 around 1:50 p.m. The preliminary investigation indicates that the rear driver's side tire on a Dodge Ram 1500 separated from the vehicle while it was heading north on I-495.
The tire entered the southbound lanes and hit a Lexus NX200t. The investigation indicates the Lexus then crashed into a concrete barrier and guardrail, police reported. Tammy Lynn Edwards, 59, of Washington, D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services. The people in the pickup didn't sustain any injuries, the Maryland State Police reported.
