Jing-Ying Institute Holding Safety Workshop for College Students

Monday night's program will provide information for students on how to avoid trouble, minimize risks, and escape quickly.

It’s August, and for some Broadneck parents, that means time for college students to pack up and leave the nest.

For most parents, there comes worry, including concerns about the safety of their child in another environment.

“When students go away to college, they face many new challenges - including new dangers,” said Billy Greer, owner of in Arnold. “Every year on U.S. campuses, there are thousands of assaults, thousands of sex offenses, tens of thousands of burglaries, and dozens of murders.”

To provide local students with the tools to reduce these risks, Greer will be sponsoring a workshop for college students focused on personal protection next Monday evening, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m.

“Students will learn how to avoid trouble - avoidance is the ultimate form of personal protection,” explained Greer. “When trouble catches up with you despite your best efforts, you’ll want to know how to minimize your risk and escape quickly. If all else fails, you may be forced to fight back and you’ll want to know how best to handle a larger and stronger attacker.”

The emphasis, said Greer, is on learning simple principles that are easy to remember and apply, rather than focusing on more complex techniques that require lots of practice to master.

The cost for the workshop is $10. The Institute is located at 1195 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., #6, in Arnold. Registration is recommended as space is limited and walk-in registration may not be available if the workshop has filled from pre-registrations. Participants under age 18 must have a release form signed by a parent or guardian.
