Labor Day Reminders from MD Natural Resources Police

The month of September brings the end of summer with Labor Day weekend and the start of fall camping and hunting activities.

Labor Day weekend has arrived and the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) is reminding citizens to make safety a priority during this last holiday weekend of the summer.

The NRP is concerned because of the unusually high number of boating deaths this year and officers will step up its enforcement this weekend, focusing on alcohol consumption, negligent operation, bow riding and navigational violations.

NRP is also urging boaters to be aware of any debris in the waterways and the possibility of missing or misplaced navigational aids after Hurricane Irene. NRP also urges mariners to inspect all vessels for any damage, debris or water on board before heading out on the water.

With the cooler temperatures come more state park visitors, and NRP is reminding campers to obey the law and be courteous to other visitors.

“Labor Day is the unofficial transition from summer to fall activities,” said Col. George Johnson IV, Superintendent of the NRP. “Families will continue to enjoy camping, boating and fishing in the cooler September weather, and, as various hunting seasons begin, we urge everyone to make safety the top priority while enjoying any of these activities."

Hikers and campers should inform friends or relatives of their plans before they depart, including destination and trip length," said Sgt. Art Windemuth, spokesman for the NRP.

With the start of hunting season, NRP also reminds hunters to always think about safety before entering the field, marsh or woodlands.

Hunting safety tips include:

  • Remember to always point the muzzle of your weapon in a safe direction and identify your target before pulling the trigger;
  • Always use a fall restraint system when hunting from elevated platforms; and
  • Complete the required safety course before going hunting.
