Shockwave from Train Derailment, Explosion Felt in Broadneck

Details are scant but a reported explosion was heard in Perry Hall, Rosedale and Overlea-Fullerton.

A CSX freight train derailed Tuesday afternoon in the White Marsh area, sending a plume of smoke over a wide area, according to authorities.

A shockwave from the explosion was felt for miles surrounding the incident, as far as Arnold and Severna Park.

Police say they received a call at 2:02 p.m. May 28 reporting a derailed CSX train in the 7500 block of Lake Drive near an industrial park in White Marsh.

"We don’t know if there are any injuries at this time," said police spokeswoman Louise Rogers-Feher. "We do know a freight train derailed and we’re waiting for more information to come in as we speak."

Several buildings reportedly collapsed in the area, according to preliminary reports.

There were no initial reports of injuries, but hazardous material teams were responding to the scene.

Residents in the area reported on Twitter that they heard an explosion and felt the ground shake near the time of the incident. On Broadneck Patch's Facebook page, several residents chimed in with their experiences:

Mindy Skinner Littell: "Heard/felt it in Arnold. Shook the house and I jumped a foot. Hope everyone is OK."

Bill Evans: "Shook the hell out of my warehouse in White Marsh."

Dava Hansen Unglesbee: "I heard something - and my dogs went nuts! Wondered if it was a mini earthquake. "
