Cyberbullied UMBC Student Takes Stand for Feminist Activism

Kelly Martin Broderick's photo was stolen and turned into a hurtful Internet meme.

Kelly Martin Broderick was trying to make a particular point with the photo she posted online: feminists come in all shapes and sizes, and there's no one way to describe them.

But her photo was twisted into a hurtful Internet meme that was shared thousands of times on Facebook and Tumblr.

Broderick, a student at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, was "in shock" when she found out, she writes on xoJane.com.

Further angering her, she discovered that Facebook would not remove the photo because it did not violate the site's privacy standards.

But Broderick did not retreat. She started a new Tumblr called We Are What Feminists Look Like to draw attention to her original point: addressing feminist stereotypes.

"And they picked the wrong feminist fatty to mess with," she writes.
