Retire Your Worries at Charlestown

Resident Marian Maihan appreciates the predictability of Charlestown's monthly service package, which bundles daily expenses into one bill.

When Marian Maihan was exploring her senior living options, she was looking for a retirement community that eliminated the hassles of homeownership and provided great value.

With maintenance-free residences, an inclusive monthly service package, and impressive amenities, Charlestown, an Erickson Senior Living community in Catonsville, Md., easily checked both boxes.

"When I consider all of the things that are included and what Charlestown has to offer, I think it's a really good value," says Marian, who moved to the community in 2024 from Baltimore's Mount Washington neighborhood.

Charlestown's pricing structure is made up of two components: the monthly service package and the 90% refundable entrance fee.*

The monthly service package bundles the costs of all utilities, maintenance, including appliance repair and replacement, a meal plan at on-site restaurants, and more, into one predictable bill.

"Even if your house is paid off, homeownership still comes with various expenses like property taxes, insurance, and utilities, which can fluctuate in price," says Sales Director Matt Dougherty.

Marian values the freedom that comes with not having to worry about fluctuating bills and maintenance.

"I don't think twice about turning on my heat or air conditioning because I know the electric bill is going to be consistent," explains Marian. "I also don't have to worry about snow removal, raking leaves, or cutting the grass. And thanks to the meal plan, my grocery bill is much lower. It's all those little things that you don't think about but really need to consider."

She also appreciates that she can use her meal plan to dine with guests.

"I often have extra meals left at the end of each month, so I invite my daughter and her family or friends over for dinner," says Marian. "Last summer, when the grandchildren were out of school, they sometimes came and spent the day with me, and we had lunch in one of the restaurants. They loved it! And I loved that we got to spend time together."

Peace of mind

Marian's financial stability is further strengthened by the industry-leading, 90% refundable entrance fee--the heart of the community's pricing structure. The entrance fee, collected as part of the residency process, will go back to you or your beneficiaries if or when you leave the community.

Charlestown's Home for Life commitment* was another significant draw for Marian.

"I didn't want my daughter to be faced with hard decisions, like moving me. I just wanted to know that I am cared for, for life," she says.

No one ever expects to run out of money, but sometimes unforeseen issues arise that can quickly deplete your hard-earned savings and put you at risk. At Charlestown, we've planned for life's uncertainties and are prepared to assist eligible residents who outlive their resources. No one will be asked to leave the community because of a genuine inability to pay.

Opportunities galore

Without the stress and hassle of home maintenance, residents have more time to pursue their hobbies--especially since access to the community's amenities is also included in the monthly service package.

Charlestown boasts a fitness center, billiards and game room, in-house TV studio, creative arts studio, pickleball and bocce courts, hair salon and barbershop, and a library. There are also dozens of clubs and activities to participate in, offering plenty of opportunities for residents to connect with neighbors who share similar interests.

"I use the fitness center, frequently walk throughout the community with friends, and I'm learning how to play bocce," says Marian. "I also take on-site classes, volunteer as a resident ambassador, sing with the Harmonizers choir, and I'm part of a Jewish group."

Charlestown continues to reinvest in its amenities and services, ensuring residents enjoy the best value now and in the future.

"We consistently update our clubhouses and residence buildings to keep the community fresh and modern, enhancing the quality of life for every resident," says Dougherty. "We recently added a new indoor pickleball court and expanded our music room. We also unveiled a new restaurant called Cafe on Main."

The right move

Celebrating her second anniversary at the community this winter, Marian is reflecting on her decision to move to Charlestown with confidence.

"I wouldn't do anything differently!" says Marian. "I'm amazed to see people who are well into their nineties regularly participating in activities and enjoying the amenities here. I think having others to share meals with, attending events, and enjoying performances all keeps you younger."
