Swim Laps, Honor Veterans Aug. 14 in Catonsville

By Jeff Seidel

The Orioles Bird and others are going to be taking to the pool soon to help a veterans group in Catonsville.

From from 1-3 p.m. Aug. 14, there's going to be a "Swim for Service" event at the Charlestown pool, 719 Maiden Choice Lane in Catonsville.

This will be a lap-a-thon for charity to benefit the Dr. Charles B. Frank Post No. 219 post at Charlestown.

The Bird is going to get things started that day by rafting across the pool for a kind of ceremonial first length.

Those who participate in the event are getting pledges based upon the laps they swim that day, and there's still time to sign up!

For those who don't swim, walking across the pool still counts in this event.

To register for a 30-minute time slot, or for the whole two hours, or to make a donation, visit the event website.

All ages and swimming abilities are welcome as this is not a race—it's all about the laps.

Each participant will get a T-shirt as well as refreshments.

The person who swims the highest number of laps in each age group will be recognized.

The VFW Post No. 219 is operated out of Charlestown. It supports the national mission of the VFW and has donated to many charitable organizations in the past, including the VFW National Home for Children.
