Here are the top three stories in Catonsville today:

  1. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the athletics department of many Maryland colleges, including the athletic department of Catonsville's UMBC which lost $4.9 million in fiscal 2021. UMBC also decided not to charge students the annual athletic fee in 2021, which is normally two-thirds of its funding, and used $2.6 million of institutional funding to support the department. UMBC has been a "well-managed financial athletics department" but now has a deficit of $6.8 million. Due to the struggling athletic departments, the University System of Maryland officials are looking at changing the policy that requires athletic departments to be self-sustaining. (The Business Journals)
  2. A winning Pick 5 ticket worth $25,000 was sold on Mar. 8 at Soda Pop Shop, 1026 Ingleside Avenue in Catonsville. The ticket is unclaimed as of Monday, Mar. 14. "Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must redeem their tickets at the Maryland Lottery Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, which is open by appointment only." (Fox Baltimore)
