Here are the top three stories in Catonsville today:

  1. The video of the stabbing attack on Jan. 10 at Lansdowne High School in Baltimore County was released yesterday, Jan. 12. The attack occurred in a bathroom stall during lunch hour. The suspect, a female student who was wielding a knife, was taken into custody by Baltimore County Police. The victim, a 15-year-old female student, was taken to the hospital and is still recovering from serious injuries. Cindy Sexton, head of the Baltimore County Teachers Association, said, "Our schools need to be safe. If our students are not safe, they can't learn. I've also heard from educators at Lansdowne specifically who say it was a frightening situation." (CBS Baltimore)
  2. There has been a lot of push back on the 2022 juvenile justice reform bill, which prohibits authorities from criminally charging children under the age of 13, at the start of the 2023 session of Maryland's General Assembly. Republican Del. Kathy Szeliga, of Baltimore County, said, "The pendulum has definitely gone too far" and she will sponsor 2023 legislation to undo some of the reforms. The issue was highlighted recently when an Anne Arundel County 12-year-old brought a handgun to school. Szeliga commented, "When you have a 12-year-old show up at school with a handgun, a clip, and ammunition and there's no consequence, it's too far. There's not even a record." (WUSA 9)
  3. A jury trial is underway for James A. Reddick, a 31-year-old of Baltimore, who is charged in the April 2020 fatal shooting of Deontae Belcher, 25, of Baltimore County. The shooting occurred on Horns Point Road in Cambridge. Reddick faces first- and second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first- and second-degree murder, assault, robbery, and numerous handgun charges. (MyEasternShoreMD)
