City Council Worksession Preview: June 7

A summary of the major agenda items for Tuesday's meeting.

The College Park City council will convene for it's twice-monthly worksession Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Meetings and worksessions are held in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, located at 4500 Knox Rd.

Dist. 2 BOE Representative Peggy Higgins and Prince George's County Schools Superintendent William Hite will be at Tuesday's meeting to answer questions about the much-discussed funding cuts to Prince George's County Schools. The proposed cuts would be made in in areas like transportation services, specialty programs and literacy programs, and have been met with strong reactions from the community.

A company called CGI Communications has expressed interest in producing a "welcome video" for the city of College Park, as well as additional videos showcasing the city's education, quality of life and real estate. The proposal is a product of a partnership between the National League of Cities (NLC), the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and CGI.

In lieu of payment, CGI is requesting that the city provide a letter of introduction to help CGI solicit advertising from local businesses. 

CGI has serviced other cities in Maryland, including Laurel, Bel Air and Havre de Grace. Check out examples of their work here.

FY 2012 Action Plan

The council will wrap up discussions regarding the FY 2012 Action Plan before adopting it at next week's meeting. You can check out a version of the plan here, though changes have not yet been made to reflect that the city's attempt to acquire the has since been dropped .

Program Open Space

Each year, the city of College Park receives a certain allocation of Program Open Space funds, and this year, it is slated to receive $174,774. City staff has proposed that a portion of the funds be used to develop Hollywood Gateway Park, and another portion go toward renovating Duvall Field. The council will discuss the use of this money further at Tuesday's worksession.
