• Maryland Congressional Delegation announces $6.9 million for firefighters, first responders (wvnews.com) — College Park residents should know that the University of Maryland’s Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute in College Park is receiving about $310,000 in federal funding to upgrade firefighter training gear and simulators. It’s part of nearly $7 million awarded statewide to bolster emergency response equipment, training, and recruitment for departments from Prince George’s County to the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland.

• MaGGIe vs. Baselines: Quantitative Superiority in Video Instance Matting (hackernoon.com) — Researchers based at the University of Maryland in College Park helped develop MaGGIe, a new video instance matting method that outperforms existing models on accuracy and consistency. While highly technical, the work highlights cutting-edge computer vision research happening right in College Park’s academic community and may influence future video editing and visual effects tools.
