Lakeland Heritage Weekend: The Lakeland community has seen a lot of change since it began 120 years ago. On Saturday and Sunday, the historically African American neighborhood will be honoring its past and present with the Lakeland Heritage Weekend.
The Lakeland Community Heritage Project was started four years ago as a means of preserving the community's rich history. This year marks the 120th anniversary of the neighborhood, meaning this weekend's celebration is anticipated to be bigger than ever: a parade through Lakeland, a history-filled trolley ride to Lake Artemesia, a performance by Kash Wright Trio, and Sunday morning service at First Baptist Church are all on the docket.
Festivities will begin on Saturday at the College Park Community Center, located at 5051 Pierce Avenue. The parade will kick off at 12 p.m., and events will be held throughout the day, and conclude Sunday morning with worship service at the First Baptist Church of College Park.
