Take a Break with National Doughnut Day

You know you can always rely on Patch to keep you abreast of in town. Today, we have National Doughnut Day.

National Doughnut Day was actually started 73 years ago by the Salvation Army. Yes, the same Salvation Army at which you just dumped half a closet's worth of old clothes. 

It turns out that the doughnut you'll eat today was not much different than those fed to American soldiers in the late 1930s. According to a statement from Salvation Army, two volunteers came up with the idea of "frying doughnuts in soldiers’ helmets near the front lines as a quick treat." Uh, yum? 

In honor of this auspicious occasion, Dunkin Donuts is forking over a free doughnut with the purchase of a medium sized drink. Never mind that you can probably pay for a doughnut with the change you find on the ground on the way from your car to the counter - it's the principle of the thing. 

Though there aren't any in College Park, Krispy Kreme is giving away doughnuts to anyone who walks into the store - no purchase required. The locations closest to College Park are in Washington D.C. and Rockville. 

Pro tip: Head in early before someone goes in and snags all the Boston Cremes and you're stuck with the sad, naked unfrosted ones.
