News that the head coach of Texas A&M has committed to lead the UMd. men's basketball team broke Monday night.

The University of Maryland announced Monday evening that Mark Turgeon, of Texas A&M, has been selected to succeed as the head coach of UMd.'s men's basketball team.

According to a statement from UMd., Turgeon was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2011. He is the only coach in Big 12 history to win 24 games in each of his four seasons.

"Maryland's got a great basketball tradition," Turgeon said in a statement. "(These programs are) real similar. It's a gut feeling. Both programs are great. I'm a blessed person to have the choice that I had to make today."
