University Of Maryland Police Car Strikes Intoxicated Pedestrian

Pedestrian walked in front of police cars responding to a call, University of Maryland Police spokesman said.

An intoxicated pedestrian stepped in front of University of Maryland police cars responding to an assault in College Park early Sunday morning, a University of Maryland Police spokesman said.

The 19-year-old pedestrian, who was not a University of Maryland student, stepped in between two police cars heading to Route 1 to respond to the call, said Capt. Marc Limansky, a UMPD spokesman. The pedestrian was bumped on the leg and attempted to walk away from the police vehicles, Limansky said.

"We wanted to make sure he wasn't injured in the accident," Limansky said.

The pedestrian declined medical treatment, and submitted to a Breathalyzer test, which revealed he was intoxicated. Charges are pending because the man had a fake ID and had been drinking at one of the local bars, Limansky said.

More information wasn't immediately available on the assault to which the officers had been responding, which was reported at a Subway restaurant on Route 1. "It was a typical nighttime, after the bars let out kind of situation," Limansky said.
