HBO Signs Veep for Second Season

The HBO comedy uses a soundstage in Columbia.

By HBO’s standards, 1.4 million viewers for a series premiere is not a lot, according to hitfix.com, but it was enough for its new comedy “Veep” to be renewed for a second season.

The comedy series, which follows Julia Louis Dreyfus as a foul-mouthed vice -president of the United States, premiered on April 22 and is partly recorded at a soundstage in Columbia. HBO will produce 10 episodes for the second season, according to hitfix.

Gov. Martin O’Malley hailed the economic benefits of having HBO come back to the state when the show was announced in October.

“This project will not only bring new jobs to Maryland, but will also benefit local businesses that will serve the cast and crew during production,” he said in a statement. The production was estimated at the time to create some 2,000 jobs.

Previous award-winning HBO productions that were filmed in Maryland include Shot in the Heart, Something the Lord Made, The Corner and The Wire. Maryland’s newly enacted Film Production Employment Act of 2011 offers a partial tax credit for local production expenditures and encourages producers to use local film crews.
