Howard County General Hospital To Hold Free Virtual Health Classes

Howard County General Hospital will hold free virtual health classes for people with chronic conditions, including diabetes and cancer.

COLUMBIA, MD—Howard County General Hospital in Columbia will hold free Living Well workshops, presenting coping skills and management techniques for people with chronic conditions, including diabetes.

Living Well with Chronic Disease is a six-week workshop for individuals living with or at risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, arthritis, lung disease or other long-lasting health concerns. Participants will learn techniques to cope with feelings of frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, develop skills to communicate more effectively about their health and learn exercises and healthy eating habits to maintain and improve well-being. Caregivers are welcome.

  • Thursdays, March 16 to April 20, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom
  • Thursdays, April 27 to June 1, from 6 to 6:30 p.m. via small group conference call with an instructor
  • Wednesdays, May 17 to June 21, from noon to 12:30 p.m. via small group conference call with an instructor

Living Well with Diabetes is an interactive workshop that teaches diabetes self-management skills to include goal setting and stress management strategies; glucose monitoring; skin and foot care; techniques to cope with feelings of frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; skills to communicate more effectively with family, friends and health professionals; and exercise and nutrition appropriate for diabetics. Course materials are free and sent to the address provided at registration.

  • Mondays, March 13 to April 17, from noon to 12:30 p.m. via small group conference calls with an instructor
  • Wednesdays, March 15 to April 19, from 6 to 6:30 p.m. via small group conference calls with an instructor
  • Wednesdays, April 26 to May 31, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom
  • Wednesdays, May 3 to June 7, from noon to 12:30 p.m. via small group conference calls with an instructor

Cancer Self-Management is a six-week program where participants can share experiences in a supportive environment and explore skills to maintain balanced nutrition; minimize fatigue, frustration, pain and isolation; increase sleep quality; regain and maintain flexibility and endurance; and understand treatment and complementary therapy decisions. Caregivers are welcome.

  • Thursdays, May 4 to June 8, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom
