As a single mother, watching my son Reid flourish during his first year of middle school has been nothing short of extraordinary. At just 12 years old, Reid has shown a level of determination and character that fills me with immeasurable pride every day.

When Reid was selected through the lottery for the APEX Arts Magnet program, I witnessed his eyes light up with possibility. He embraced this opportunity with the same quiet determination he's always shown, maintaining his consistent A/B academic record and earning honor roll recognition every quarter this year. His dedication to learning has never wavered, even through the challenging transition to middle school. What moves me most is how Reid has blossomed socially.

As an only child, I worried about how he would navigate the complex social landscape of middle school. Instead of withdrawing, he surprised me by founding a writing and drawing club with his friends. Watching him create this supportive space for creativity has been one of my greatest joys as his mother. December brought another proud moment when Reid was named Student of the Month. Hearing his teachers describe him as "a positive influence who always goes above and beyond" confirmed what I've always known about my son's character.

Reid's creative spirit continues to flourish through the short stories and comics he's written, which he plans to self-publish this year. His excitement about basketball tryouts this fall shows his wonderful balance of interests and his eagerness to participate fully in school life.

Raising Reid on my own has presented challenges, but his resilience, kindness, and thoughtfulness make every struggle worthwhile. He approaches life with a maturity that sometimes leaves me in awe, consistently showing consideration for others and a desire to contribute positively to his community. As his mother, I couldn't be more proud of the young man Reid is becoming. His journey reminds me daily that with determination and heart, our children can overcome any obstacle and shine their light brightly for others to follow.
