Fire Hits Crofton Apartment Complex

Dozens of firefighters were on the scene of the blaze at Keswick Park apartments.

Firefighters responded Thursday evening to a fire at a a three-story apartment complex in Crofton. 

Witnesses told Patch that the fire began at about 5:30 p.m. and appeared to come from a second-floor unit of the Keswick Park Apartments, located at 1609 Parkridge Circle. 

Fire department spokesman Lt. Keith Hamilton said the fire was under control just before 6 p.m. It was kept in check by the apartment's sprinkler system. 

Hamilton said investigators believe the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. The fire caused an estimated $15,000 in damage. 

The blaze brought 34 firefighters to the scene, including some from Anne Arundel County, Fort Meade and Prince George's County. 

A 20-year-old man was home at the time of the fire but was unhurt.
