Today is 7-11: Get Your Slurpee On!

Today is the eleventh day of July.

Numerically, it's 7-11, which can mean only one thing to Slurpee lovers everywhere — that's right, it's Free Slurpee Day at 7-11 convenience stores across the country.

Until 7 p.m. (the giveaway began at 11 a.m., of course), visitors will receive a 7.11-ounce (I am not making this up) slushy treat, free of cost.

"7-Eleven Day, or free Slurpee Day, gets bigger and more popular every year," Joe DePinto, 7-Eleven president and CEO, said in a press release. "This year we expect to give away 7 million Slurpee drinks, more than ever before, beating last year's offer by 2 million."

The company is also recognizing its 85th year as the "retail leader of convenience," and the 45th birthday of the iconic frozen  drink, according to DePinto.

"But the day is also when we do something special to thank customers for their support and welcome new guests," he said in the statement.

We all have our special memories of the frozen drinks available year-round but stand as a symbol of carefree summers.

I remember my youth softball coach taking the entire team for Slurpees after our games, whether we won or lost.

They always tasted better after a victory, but that wasn't a requirement for the team bonding.
