6 Local Businesses Sponsoring Kevin O'Brien Memorial Run
The 25-year-old Edgewater man was killed during June's violent derecho storm when he was driving in south county.

At least six local businesses have already committed to sponsoring the Kevin O’Brien Memorial 5K Race this October, honoring a 25-year-old killed during June’s violent “derecho” storm.
O’Brien was killed when a large branch fell on his SUV while he was driving on Harwood Road in south county. A passenger in the back seat survived, but paramedics pronounced O’Brien dead at the scene.
In the weeks following his death, O’Brien’s friend and neighbor Joey Ridgeway began organizing and gathering sponsors for a memorial run to help the O’Brien family pay for funeral-related expenses. Since July, Ridgeway has worked on solidifying sponsors, creating a registration website for people to sign up for the race and finalizing race details.

As of Friday, Ridgeway said six businesses have partnered to sponsor the race, including Edgewater Fitness, Dunkin’ Donuts, GNC, Quality Signs and Engraving, and BB&T Bank—each located in Edgewater.
The race is scheduled to take place at 8 a.m. Oct. 28, beginning at Edgewater Fitness and taking runners down Mayo Road, through the Woodland Beach community and concluding back at the local gym. There also will be a one-mile walk as an alternative to the 5K, Ridgeway said.
